I'd have a single digit N be shorthand for an NxN board, but Sudoku boards
don't have to be square.  You can have them be 2x4, 4x3, etc.  The board is
always the transverse of each "supercell"'s contents, so you have to decide
whether 3x4 describes the supercell or the board itself (the other would be
4x3).  That's easy, though ;)

I'd say it should be the default; people can always turn it off if they don't
want to see it, but most would, I think, find it annoying to constantly have
their moves rejected because they didn't see a particular cell in just the right
way.

Perhaps 'mark' for the name?
