The email standard is definitely "-- " not "--".  Unfortunately many email programs will always strip the final space.  Some email programs have code to correctly produce "-- ", but code downstream strips the space.  The online email interface I use, always adds "--".  Therefore code which looks for "-- " needs to accept "--" as a synonym.
