Re: [PyrNet-L] Advice column

Hi Steph:

It was just a very short Q&A in a monthly column. THis is how it went:

Question: "My Great Pyrenees has a problem. He is only 8 months old but
weighs over 100 pounds. But what really bothers me is that he growls.
I've tried telling him, "bad dog" and "no" but it doesn't work
(from a reader in Deer River, Minneasota.)

Dog Fancy's reply was: "The weight of a 27 inch adult Great Pyrenees make
should be about 100 pounds, so your puppy is grossly overweight. See your
veternarian for a thorough checkup, explaining your concern with his weight
and growling. The growling could be health-related.
After your puppy gets a clean bill of health on both counts, you can begin
teaching your dog the basic good behaviors you want him to do, such as sit,
come, down and stay. Use lots of praise in a happy voice, but no food
rewards, and no more scolding.

That last part was the part I wondered about -- never any more scolding?
And never any food rewards (I can understand that for an overweight dog, I
guess).

Anyone have any idea whose Pyr is in the photo which accompanied the
column?

I would hate for the general public who reads this magazine to think Pyrs
are normally agressive and growl a lot.
