Yes, this is how it works. Our clinic charges 32.00 to insert the chip, and 
we use the Home-Again Chips. (AKC endorsed Schering chip) Our cost on the 
chips fron Schering is about 15.00 each, and the scanner was 200.00. If an 
avid chip is scanned, it just reads "AVID CHIP" on the display. Our Schering 
rep told me that Avid did not want their chips read by schering scanners and 
that it was all about politicts, so thats how they had to do it. I don't 
know. 

From what I understand, the scanners given to shelters and rescues by 
schering are the Universal Scanner. I know nothing about Avid, but we order 
quite a bit from Schering and they are always pleasant to deal with. I think 
that the AKC recovery registers numbers from both chips, but I could be wrong.

There was a third microchip manufacturer who went under. Unfortunately, so 
did their database. I went with the Home Again because thats what we use at 
work, but I am very pleased with it.
