Try putting the collar on backwards, if it still covers the 
incisions, it should prevent him from scratching the area.  On the 
big dogs the collar can hit them in the front legs, if it looks like 
it will work backwards, you can cut a rounded scallop in the front so 
it's a bit easier for them to get up and down.
