I tend to agree with Charlotte and Jan that bathing
once a week is too much, and really should not be necessary. A correct pyr coat
should be self cleaning and not need a lot grooming, I would be afraid that
washing with shampoo once a week would make the coat softer and more likable to
mat, and destroy the self cleaning quality of the coat - with some dogs it may
even lead to skin trouble.
I sometime rinse with water if they are covered in mud,
but only wash with shampoo once or twice a year apart from the showdogs that
usually gets washed before shows. But then I don't care much wether they are
snow white or more off white in colour, as long as their coats are brushed out
and free of mats. Also I think it important to remember that pyrs are supposed
to have a somewhat hard coat not the soft fluffy stuf that so many people
like.
<<Have you noticed
Charlotte that some Pyrs seem to have cleaner coats than others? They just don't seem to attract the dirt and if they do then a good brush is all that is needed. Others have these coats that never look clean a week after a bath no matter what you do. >> I have certainly noticed that. My Sherryl has a coat
that is almost always dirty, it is not that she brings in more dirt than the
others, or needs much grooming - 5 minutes once or twice the month wil keep
nicelooking if not exactly clean and free of mats - she has a very hard coat,
but her basic colour is not very white in it self, more mottled with yellow and
orange spots all over and a week to two after a wash she is dirty. It may not be
a very attractive coat compared to some, but I believe it would be an excellent
coat for a lgd.
