I have used 20 Mule Team Borax off the grocery shelf in the same way!
Some people actually have it poured into their foundations of their houses, I 
have heard, in crawl spaces, etc.  It will not harm your animals, I am told.  
I would sprinkle it on the rugs and sweep it on the hardwood floors, then 
vacuum up.  It worked great.
