Mark, Welcome to the list.    In short, Yes they are smart, and they can
train, but they are stubborn, and may not chose to listen to you all the
time.  That one time may be all it takes for something to happen.  It is
not worth the risk!  They love to wander, fencing is an object to be
overcome, and they will put their minds to good use toward that purpose. 
I hope you know that they can be barkers too!  Life is never dull with a
Pyr.  :-)  Cindy
