Re: [pyrnet] eye color
The AKC standard of 1935
said: Eyes: Of medium size set slightly
obliquely, dark rich brown in color with close eyelids, well
pigmented.
I don't think it included any faults at that time.
The French standard of 1970
(don't know if it's been revised) says: Eyes:
The rather small eyes, of intelligent and contemplative expression, are amber
brown in color. They are surrounded by tight lids, bordered in black, and
placed slightly obliquely. The look is gentle and
dreamy.
Faults: Round eyes, too light and
prominent (staring); drooping eyelids, an evil or haggard expression;
insufficient pigment around the eyes.
Disqualification: Missing pigment on the
eyelids.
The current (as far as I know)
British standard of 1972 says: Eyes: The eyes
should be almond-shaped and of dark amber-brown color. The close-fitting
eyelids should be set somewhat obliquely and should be bordered with
black. Drooping lower eyelids should be penalized. The expression
should be intelligent and contemplative.
Current AKC standard, effective
August 1, 1990 says: Eyes: Medium-sized,
almond-shaped, set slightly obliquely, rich dark brown. Eyelids are
close-fitting with black rims.
Faults: (For
eyes) Missing pigmentation on eyerims. Eyelids round,
triangular, loose or small.
In The New Complete Great
Pyrenees book by Paul Strang, under An In-Depth Look at the Standard, it
says: Eyes must be almond-shaped. Round eyes completely destroy
expression. The iris is a deep , rich brown. The color should,
however, never appear dull. This gives insight into the French Standard's
description of the eyes as "ambered" brown, not to indicate a yellow eye, but
rather, to indicate a certain brightness. The eyes are set obliquely, the
outside corners rise slightly. Some breeders describe this aspect as
"Chinese" or "Asiatic". The almond shape and oblique set bring the eyes
alive. Full black eyerims contribute greatly to
expression.
I'm not sure who actually wrote
this part of the book, whether it was Mr. Strang, possibly Mary Crane or
who.
Rajah, my oldest girl,
consisting of working lines that go back to Quibbletown, Karolaska
and Tip 'N Chip and of classic type herself has lighter eyes than the
rest of my guys. Her son, Rollie, may have lighter eyes than his sire
(Moses) but it's hard to tell yet. I do prefer the dark "chocolate" brown
eyes but as hers aren't yellow and are more of the brilliant "amber" brown, it
sets her expression off nicely....in my opinion anyway.
So is this guys more yellow wolf
type or transparent brown?
Later,
Chrissy
