Karen, exactly, we continue to desensitize each generation, children
place less and less value on lives.  It's no wonder that kids that are
cruel to animals and go unchecked often go on to commit terrible crimes
against humans.

I've mentioned before on this list that I have a sister-in-law that would
buy her two sons a puppy and a kitten at the start of every school year,
and then taken them to the Vet. the following summer to be put down so as
not to "screw up" their summers having to deal with pets.  I never
figured out where she got the Vet. to do this to healthy young animals. 
They were very affluent people in a very affluent area.  They did end up
at some point with a Springer spaniel that did survive the family to a
fairly old age.  My brother absolutely adored that dog.  One day they
found out it had cancer of the tail, and the same day she had it put
down?  My brother commented to our Mother later on ,that he was haunted
by the fact that he never even knew if something could have been done to
save Checkers?  Needless to say...I do not get along, at all, with that
part of the family!  Cindy
