[pyrnet] Doggie Grief?

Our Pyr Sasha joined us about a year ago.  We live in Kansas City and all the family is in the Milwaukee, WI area.  In that year we have visited 4 or so times.

My husband's father has been in ill health for the last couple of years (Diabetes and heart problems and 82 years of living).  On each of our visits Sasha would immediately head down the hall to visit Grandpa in the den and would walk slowly by his side as he came out to see the rest of the family.  (Diabetes had robbed him of feeling in his feet and he was very unsteady but resented attempts at helping him.)  He always came out with a hand resting gently on her shoulders.

He passed away on Sunday, March 3rd and we left immediately for WI.  On Monday morning when we arrived at the house Sasha headed for the den.  She emerged immediately looking a little confused and walked down the hall to his bedroom, which is where he passed away (she had never gone in the room before).  She made a brief stop in the room, walked out to my husband nuzzled his hand and laid down under the kitchen table with a large sigh.  During the following days that we were there she never set foot down the hall.  She knew he was gone and would never be coming back.

Some people would say that she had picked up on our feelings (truthfully one of those passings that we all viewed as a blessed release for him).  She was very subdued at the house and her old self during the evening at our daughter's house playing with the 2 Rat Terrorists our daughter is currently fostering and the one that is there full time.  She seemed to sense that one was a place of mourning and the other was not.  Almost as though she understood the proper etiquette.
