Re: [pyrnet] Chickens (was: Getting a Pyr to Eat)

I have had my pyr in with my goats for the last 7 months.    I just got the chickens a month ago, I have 30 Rhode Island and 3 White Leghorns in the goat pasture.  The first day the chickens were here, she did get a little excited and chased a couple of them.  Now Winnie Bear just meanders around with them. She takes it for granted now, that she's  responsible for them.  She's a great LGD, she takes her job seriously.

In the kennel run that is attached to the pasture is where I feed Winnie Bear and where she can escape to sleep in peace.  In there I have 3 Silkie hens and a rooster.  They are really flighty birds, but Winnie is great with them, she never spooks them.  I have to keep the Silkies separate from my Rhode Islands.  The Rhode Islands will corner the Silkies and gang up on them.

I got Winnie Bear from the PA Rescue, I am so lucky, she worked out great!  Unfortunately I had to bring Pooh Bear back to the PA Rescue last week.  We adopted both of them last year, as they had come from the same home.  The previous owner died, and the Rescue knew very little about the dogs.  We tried for 8 months, but she just didn't work out.  She didn't really like being in with the goats, and I didn't trust her with the chickens.  She also wouldn't let Winnie Bear eat.  Unless I stood there Winnie didn't get fed.  Plus she dug out constantly, no matter what I tried, she dug out.  Gretta Osterman from the Rescue is going to evaluate her for a few weeks before she places her again.  I don't think farm life was for Pooh Bear.

Good luck with your chickens.  I love mine, they are neat to watch and I love hearing them cluck.  I also enjoy hearing the rooster crowing.  I'm thinking about getting another rooster to put in with the Rhode Islands.

Hi Chrissy and all,

Slight change of subject here (though I have been enjoying the tape worm discussion and glad to hear that chickens are the best way to control insect pests..)

I'm interested to read that your dogs and chickens will be in the same field as I am still having problems with my dogs and the chickens.  Things had been getting better over the last week (since they killed one) but this evening Bear accidentally managed to corner one in the shed and got it in his mouth before I could pounce on him and free it. No harm done, luckily. I've been following Barb's good advice (thanks Barb) and the dogs had been doing very well up to this and had been allowed near the chickens (under supervision) for longer periods each day with good results.  They know they're not meant to catch them, but it  just seems that as soon as the chickens squawk and flap about the dogs can't resist their impulses.

Any suggestions, or are we doing ok and just need to keep working at it?

I'd love to know how you do it.

Mary.
