Two cardinal rules for avoiding viruses:

#1 Get a good virus protection software, (Norton, McAfee) and keep the
definitions up to date.  At least weekly and set it to scan everything.

#2  NEVER open an attachment from anyone (even your best friend) unless you
know it's coming and know what it is. If you are not sure contact the person
and ask.  Double delete all unexpected attachments.

If you follow these two rules religiously you will remain virus free.
