Re: [pyrnet] chewing - genetic???
Interesting that this topic comes up on this list, because it has also
appeared on another list that I'm on (non-pyr). As puppies, all our dogs
did a bit of chewing. Zoe took care of a wooden handle on a file cabinet,
Shania liked the wood of the window sill, Kes decided the wooden chest my
father made me needed some extra scroll work, and Zhara decided to go at
the edge of the throw rug. Hum, interesting that I don't remember anything
that Baron, our male, chewed -- is this only a female trait? I doubt it,
as we had Baron and Kes as pups at the same time and I think Baron was
clever enough to not get caught. Now that the dogs are older, they tend to
limit their chewing on their cow hooves.
Now, question for you experts. A person on the non-pyr list made the
comment that this destructive characteristic was genetic. If you have a
dog that chews and is destructive and you breed it, the pups will be have
the same destructive chewing tendencies. I don't buy that and would like
some input from you folks. I think the chewing is more of a learned
response or as in pups an activity that fills a need (teething, bordom,
etc.) and then is generally outgrown.
