[pyrnet] RE: health problem re Ivy
A couple of days ago we noticed swelling and redness around our 9 year old
Ivy's vulval area. Her groomer also noticed spots of blood on the towel in
her cage and phoned to tell us (what a gem a good groomer can be - our's is
crazy about Ivy). We took her to the vet this morning (the day he got back
from an out-of-town trip) and he suggested that her spaying conducted in
April 1998 might have been imperfect, leaving a little tissue in place. He
did an estradiol test and assorted blood tests and placed her on
antibiotics pending receipt of the estradiol results in a couple of weeks.
He also gave us cream to administer. He mentioned that sometimes surgery is
done to locate remnant tissue, but it can be tricky to locate and Ivy is
rather old for anything like that.
Our blind male mutt Bullet has always mounted her now and then but has been
engaging in this behavior more in recent days.
I checked the Senior Dogs and assorted web sites and would greatly
appreciate learning anything from anybody - we're all a little scared. Ivy
is acting normally and we use adequan for her arthritis so she gets around.
