We have a Kirby vac that we bought used back in 1985 for about $400 which
seemed crazy to me at the time.  Back then, I too was using a dog brush to
help pull the hair out of the carpet!  After nearly 20 years (5 dogs, 3
cats, 1 rabbit & 2 birds) later...that Kirby is still working great and
really sucks up the hair.  At present, in addition to our Pyr, we have a
German Shepherd and a Pug...who are also big shedders.  I'm not so crazy
about using the Kirby on bare floors though. I use a Swiffer on the areas
that are not carpeted, and while I hate buying those darn little cloths,
that thing really does work and is so quick and easy to use! It's not easy
being on the housekeeping staff for these characters. That's for sure! : )
