 Pam,
What a scene!  The tails are handy aren't
they !  I refer to my dogs' tails as "rear leashes" after a similar
experience.
I would vote for Peacemaker - Dusty knew what
was going on and how you were handling it and decided to try your way,  He
may have already tried it the more usual way - standing between the two feuding
dogs - and decided to give your way a try.  Maybe he also realized that it
was safer to be at that end if Mr Tude Man wasn't finished yet.
As for learning so quickly, I never attempted to
teach my old pyr to fetch a ball, I thought it would be like the proverbial
teaching a pig to sing, but one afternoon while working with a lab, the pyr
presented himself for a turn and did it all (including sitting and dropping the
ball at my feet when he returned) more perfectly than the lab ever did.
It's just he only did it once and then it was over forever.

Pyrs are not slow learners, they are just very
selective about what they learn and when they use it.
