In WWII reconnaissance battalions were organized as cavalry
formations and equipped with armored cars and similar equipment. In
addition, the 1st and 2nd cavalry divisions were dismounted and used
as infantry in the Pacific. The 2nd Cavalry did patrol the Mexican
border near San Diego during '42, and did so mounted.
Basically, the cavalry went looking for folks the armor could beat up on.
