For much of the conflict on the eastern front both sides used mounted 
troops to patrol gaps in the line. At times both sides were so short 
of men there were huge holes in their lines. Thus the use of cavalry.

In addition, both the Axis and the Soviets used mounted forces in 
anti partisan work. (Yes, there were anti Soviet partisans.)
