i stumbled upon a nice book over at BORDERS, it's called...
WORLD WAR II: A Visual Encyclopedia
General Editor: John Keegan
...i was able to buy the hardback on clearance for $19.99.
it's a nice thick  book with lots of photo's and captions. lots of details. 
seems complete (though brief in descriptions).
also i picked up a...
PAGES OF TIME (1944)
...from a local Bob Evans for about $5. it seems really good for what i like 
to call "flavor text" for my players. give them a feel for what life was 
like back in the '40s. holds little "real" game value, but has added some 
interesting information (birthdays: george lucas; may 14th, 1944, Prices: 
Gallon of Gas: $0.15, Best Actor: Bing Crosby in GOING MY WAY). like i said. 
interesting. find one and check it out. it's worth the few nickels.
