## Help For Koan

### Introduction

Welcome to the network Koan server. The rules of Koan are below. The commands are the same for all pbmserv games.

Object of Game: Each player has six octagonal and five square playing pieces set out on the board at the start of play as shown in diagram 1.

To win a player must get any one piece to the opponent's player's end of the board. If a player cannot move when it is their turn, or if they have lost all their pieces, they have lost.
```
X
XXX    is a _octagonal_ black piece
X
X     is a _square_ black piece
O
OOO    is a _octagonal_ white piece
O
O     is a _square_ white piece
```
Rules of moving:

1. One player uses the white playing pieces and the other uses black. White goes first.

2. On each turn a player moves one pieces one space forwards. No pieces can move backwards or sideways. Pieces cannot move directly from a square space to another square space. Square pieces are permitted to land on both square and octagonal spaces: similarly octagonal pieces can land on both types of spaces; see diagram 2.

3. No two pieces may be on the same space at the same time n.b. see the rules for capturing.

Capturing pieces.

4. When a permitted move lands a piece on a space occupied by an opposing piece, that piece may be taken on condition that;

a. octagonal pieces can only take opposing pieces (either type) which are standing on octagons (green spaces) and,

b. square pieces can only take opposing pieces (either type) which are standing on squares (square spaces). see diagram 3.

5. Only one piece may be taken on any one turn and the capturing piece occupies the space of the opponents lost piece. This capture completes the player's turn to move.

6. Players do not have to take opposing pieces when the opporturnity aries. They choose if and when to do so.
