Help For Tenjiku Shogi

Introduction

Welcome to the network Tenjiku Shogi server. The rules are similar to other Shogi variants. The pieces are described below. The commands are the same for all pbmserv games.

The challenge command is:

    tenjikushogi challenge [ -classiclionhawk][ -classicgenerals][ -classic][ -handicap=xxx] userid1 userid2

Starts a new game between userid1 and userid2.

The "-classiclionhawk" option causes the game to be played with the classic Lion Hawk movement rules.

The "-classicgenerals" option causes the game to be played with the classic Generals movement rules.

The "-classic" option is the same as specifying both "-classiclionhawk" and "-classicgenerals"

.

The full syntax for the "-handicap" option is described on the shogi help page.

For complete rules and strategy, see the online book on Tenjiku Shogi by Colin Adams.

Tenjiku Shogi

Tenjiku may be translated as "Exotic". Be sure to read note Fi on the Fire Demon before attempting to play.

Here is the opening board setup:

Tenjiku Shogi Pieces

  • An 'x' indicates a square which the piece may move or jump to.
  • A line indicates the piece may move any number of squares in that direction.
  • A number indicates the piece may move in that direction up to that number of squares, but not jumping.
  • 'a' and 'b' indicate Lion moves. The piece may jump to any of the squares, or it may make two consecutive king-moves on these squares.
  • A dot is used as a reminder of the 3-step area move which Fire Demons and Vice Generals have.

Note Fi (Fire Demon)

. . . . .
. \ | / .
. . Fi. . Fire Demon
. / | \ . does not promote
. . . . .

The Fire Demon moves any number of squares in the directions shown. It may also move as a 3-step area mover. Which means it may make a move consisting of 1-3 steps, where each step is like a king move, but only the last move may be a capture, and it may not end up on its starting square.

Any pieces in the 8 squares adjacent to the destination square are burned (captured). Any opposing piece ending its move adjacent to a Fire Demon is burned (a suicide move). If a Fire Demon moves adjacent to an opposing Fire Demon, all pieces adjacent to the moving Fire Demon are burned except for the stationary Fire Demon, and the moving Fire Demon is itself burned.

Note G (The Jumping Generals)

The Great General, Vice General, Rook General and Bishop General are ranging jumping pieces. They may move any distance in the directions indicated, or they may capture by jumping over any intervening pieces (of either player). The only limit to their jumping is that they may not jump over a King or Generals who are equal or higher in the following jumping hierarchy:

   (King)
 a Great General
 b Vice General
c Rook General or Bishop General

Traditional Tenjiku Shogi rules do not allow the generals to capture equal or higher members in the heirarchy. These rules restrict jumping but not capturing, which allows for some "nice mating threats right from the opening".

In addition, the Vice General has the same 3-step area move which the Fire Demon has.

Note HT (The Heavenly Tetrarchs)

 \ /
   ! ! !
 3 !+Ch! 3 The Heavenly Tetrarchs
   ! ! ! promoted Chariot Soldier
 / \

The Heavenly Tetrarchs cannot move to the eight adjacent squares. They may igui capture (like a lion) any piece on those squares. They may jump over any piece on those squares in order to complete the other moves.

In other words, they may (1) igui capture an adjacent piece, (2) move horizonally 2 or 3 squares, jumping a piece on the first square, but not on the second square, or (3) move diagonally any number of squares, jumping an adjacent piece if necessary.

Note Li (Lion moves)

A Lion may make two consecutive king moves, both or either of which may be a capture. It may also jump to any of the 'b' squares. This allows it to "igui capture" any piece on a 'a' square without moving (capture and move back).

The Lion Hawk may move as a Lion or a Bishop.

The Horned Falcon and Soaring Eagle have the Lion power only in certain directions. This is indicated by the 'a' and 'b' squares.
