Remember - King Jack had his play backed by Superior and his alphas.  Also
just imagine what a handful of government sanctioned Charmers could do, if
utilized correctly.

And don't forget that this happened  before the Warren commission, Vietnam,
and Watergate eroded the government's credibility with the people of
America.  This happened back when "Because the government says so." was a
more accepted reason - an innocent faith in the righteousness of the
American system. (unlike the current vogue cynicism over all aspects of the
government.)

In our real world history,  this wasn't too long after the civil rights of
Japanese-Americans were violated by their unlawful incarceration in
internment camps.  
Just how many civil rights were trampled by HUAC and McCarthy before
Senator Flanders
