Actually - since it is always related to a near death experience, that
should give a pretty good start.
The next question naturally being - why does near death experiences provide
this trigger. That is what is not known. But that question is ultimately
as meaningful as the question "Why does gravity work?". Very important in
a overview of the world, and may lead to future developments, but not very
important in an immediate sense.
Of course, one interesting question is "Why are there more deltas in the
past 50 years, then was ever recognized before." Even given that deltas
throughout history were seen as magicians, or mythical heroes, or witches,
or whatnot - why are there so many more now?
