Sure.  But if he screws something up, and adapts the screw-up into the 
storyline down the road, will you the reader/player know it...?  Perhaps 
he's done it already and no one knows it.

So you're saying the _only_ factor (or at least the only major factor) that 
led to the New Universe's demise was it's discontinuity between early and 
later stories?  As opposed to, say, the fact that the beginning stories were 
"typical" comic book (which is kinda what you're describing above) and had 
driven away any fans who might be interested in an alternate approach such 
as was taken once the "secret" was out?  And switching styles threw off the 
old-style fans who were reading the books originally?

As a counter-example, when DC revealed in...oh, 88'?  90'? whenever 
"Invasion" came out that there was a meta-human gene that gave most folks 
their superpowers, which contradicted hordes of stories from the last 50+ 
years, DC sales have continued to hold.  So one last example of a 
_successful_ attempt at this idea.
