Ghaa, that is waaay back. That came out about the time I was born (71). The
Avengers have been up and down a lot, I think it comes from the less focused
story lead. See in X-books the main theme is usually that of being/becoming
a mutant and how to get along in society. Or the Bat-books where you deal
with the unending tide of crime and with the human mind and how it deals
with tragedy (running theme). But in the like of Avengers and JLA the main
theme is lost or changes as the structure of the team changes. Take Hank
pym, Vision, Ironman and you get lots of tech stuff running in the
background. Put Booster Gold, Blue Beetle with Gnort and you get a comedy.
Now add in Bats, Superman and WW and you have 1/2 comedy and 1/2 serious, so
the story is torn in two directions, or is centered on the interaction of
the two halves (can be good like this too) Love when Batman punched out Guy.
Not a perfect recipe but a good one, is to have a direction for or lean
towards something in a series.
