    I believe that I once saw it published somewhere fairly official 
(probably the FAQ), that strength bonuses do count towards taking wounds.  
So, a 4d6+3 would count as a strenght of seven for determining wounds, and a 
5d6 would count as a 10.  That being said, if one felt that the goliath was 
too powerful, ignoring this would certainly be a good way to level it out.  
Personally, I think that the negative quirks do a more than reasonable job at 
keeping things balanced.
