While I agree that most of the old comics that we all remember are quite
camp and think how naive, you must remember that these highly sanitised
versions came out after the American Comic Code Authority reared its
repressive head. For the most part, most of the heros started out with a
solid basis in pulp fiction style heroics, more like mickey spillane's Mike
Hammer than the mickey mouse style we all came to know and groove too.
If you want an accurate story involving the heros of the past, try DC's
Golden Age miniseries, written by the uber talented James Robinson. It's
also available in collection form, and I cannot reccomend it enough for
anyone who a) wants to get an idea for one hell of a cool Glory Days
scenario and b) a deeper understanding into what heros would've been really
like in the early days.

I agree that it shows a trend towards the more realistic, but still, how
could a kid today look at the punisher and go, "Wow!" like when some of us
did when you saw spidey swing into action or supes zip through the sky ?

Not necessarily. We have it in australia as well, it's called the tall poppy
syndrome here, in fact you'd find it in most countries.

Well, we still buy them don't we ? I think its less a need to destroy, and
more a desire to understand, and try and figure out what makes these people
different enough to get all this attention. And then, there is the fact that
some of them are awful gosh darn nice to look at. ;)
