Hmmm... Well, I think that there are no wandering monsters for a very specific, and good reason. They simply do not fit into the Deadlands theme. Like relics, each abomination is a unique mystery to solve, not a hunk of meat to hack up.

Every time the posse runs across one of the horrors, it is put there for a VERY specific reason by the otherworldly Reckoners. In fact, they (the reckoners) do not want horrors wandering around. It tends to diminish the impact of that beastie - therefore less fear - therefore less power fed back to the reckoners - therefore no deadlands - therefore no reckoning.

You have probably already realized that this will neccesarily change the focus of the characters skills. Instead investigative, professional, and even inter-personal skills are the name of the game. This is reflected in the rewards a Marshal gives - you get chips by finding clues and role playing. In fact, you can only get the really big rewards through a non combat realted skill.

Yeah, its tougher on the Marshal, but the rewards are endless. BTW, if you are starting AD&D players into a Deadlands game then let them know that monster spanking hyper skills will only get them so far. And over reliance on those skills will get them dead, and right soon at that. Be up front from the beginning, and they will appreciate it later.
