Did you ever read the original (by which I mean an English translation of
the original French)?  But then it was written in 1845 as a play.  

While the 1973 movie was enjoyable and "reasonably" accurate, the Disney
movie (1993) was total crap (I did enjoy Oliver Platt).  In any event the
last one can't be used to judge the story and certainly not the book.
