IN the beginning, there was the "Core" book, and the Quick and the Dead.
After a few years of incremental changes, PEG realized that they needed to
do a minor revision of the rules. When they did they took all of the
updated rules, the information from The core rulebook, the Q&TD and some of
the updated timeline stuff (from Tales of Terror), and combined them all
into two books. they had received fan feedback, so they created separate
Player's Marshall's guides.
If anything, the new book will give you more setting information.

For a first character, I'd stick to something it simple, because:
1. You don't want to have to learn too many additional rules (i.e.,
spellcasting) for the first shot
2. IF the Marshall is new to the setting, your first character will most
likely die, rather quickly (Deadlands combat can be VERY deadly)
3. A new Marshall will forget to reward role-playing Hindrances...
That said, I always liked to play an ANNOYING character (like the Kid
archetype)
