The sword could help the character Parry attacks, either by guiding the
user's arm to block with the sword, or by having the blade actually flex
itself to an unnatural degree to make a Parry that would otherwise have been
missed. I think I like the second method better, myself.

Then there's the "May you live in interesting times" curse, which causes
unusual things to happen to the PC. Of course, this sort of thing goes with
being a PC in the first place, but I liked the idea enough to put it in.

As for it being a pacifist's sword, perhaps its cutting power is special.
Maybe it cuts through iron like a hot knife through butter, but has to hack
away at wood to make a chip. Maybe it can easily cut through everything
except living tissue, or tissue that was once living (no Zombie-matic for
-him- :) ).

Maybe it has a combination of these abilities. A pacifist with a sword that
both guards him and does hideous amounts of damage won't be using it
offensively very often, for fear of killing someone. Instead, the sword
would protect him while he busted people up with his mad (but far more
reliably non-lethal) kung fu skills.

Just some thoughts. More may follow.
