Thanks for all the responses, folks.  Lotsa good ideas.

The chi well is nice, but that makes it a lot like a shaman's guardian
spirit in that way.

I like the long and glorious history aspect.  I was already thinking that a
level 5 sword was probably some sort of national treasure, known and lusted
after on sight to anyone with either sword skill or Chinese history
knowledge.  I have visions of Stetson-wearing ninjas raining out of the
rafters on top of this guy.

I like the idea of it giving Overawe bonuses by reputation rather than
magic..

Monster magnet, not so much, unless I can think of a backstory.

Ignoring armor might work.

There's enough horrid damage in my game already.  My group has done enough
damage with pistols and shotguns to put down a mojave rattler in one round.
Did you know a double-barreled shotgun at point blank range with a few aces
can do 70 points of damage?  Man, that was one sad zombie.
