Re: [DL] Let's talk about drugs...

You can still find a version of this made without wormwood and marketed
under the name Herb Sainte. But it is not the real deal. Just like
Jagermeister in the states is not real Jagermeister (real Jager has an
opiate in it).

And Absinthe is banned in all but 2 or 3 countries in the world (iirc).
Read a very interesting article on it. But you can still find the
ingredients and recipes for it everywhere.

Oscar Wilde, Lafcadio Hearn, William Thackeray, Walt Whitman, Aaron Burr,
and General P.G.T. Beauregard are just a few of the many who relaxed over a
green absinthe.

Absinthe was banned in the states in July of 1912, touted as the "Green
Curse of France". By this time most countries had banned the drink.

Not a very prevelant drug in WW2 era.

At that time, you are going to find cocaine (Can anyone say Coca-Cola?) and
poppy(morphine and heroin) based addictions more prevelant. Especialy in the
Pacific theater.

And there was also Benzedrine. A methaamphetamine that the US gave to troops
by the gross. A lot of WW2 troops came home addicted to this particular
drug. From what my grandpa said, it was standard issue to have 30 of these
in a Marine med kit. And you could have all of the refills you wanted.

And of course, just straight up booze, much cheaper in Europe and the
Pacific theater than the States. Making "social" drinking much more
prevelant.

Hope that helps.
