Alfred Nobel was anti-war and foolishly thought that dynamite would only
be used for peaceful, industrial use. The Nobel prize was to ease his
guilt for dynamite being used in war.

In fact, it was the number of lost lives and 
limbs to his early formula that caused  Alfred Nobel
  to start the Nobel prize - to ease some of his guilt.
