Throwing my 2 cents in.

All ammo produced prior to 1890 was black powder and therefore very explosive.
Smokeless powder was not widely used until after the Spanish American war.

So to answer the origional question.  The backpack of shot shells into a furnace
would probably blow the door off the furnace but not cause it to be a 2000lb
grenade.
