Re: [DL] The Civil War again

Hi,
The short answer is that there was a *lot* of variation in uniforms as
the system was generally that each regiment decided what its "look" would
be. As these regiments were generally run by amateurs with no formal
military training, there was a considerable military fashion industry, as
good old American commercialism came into play. ;-)
While Northern units generally wore blue and Southern units wore
generally wore grey, there were any number of different colours and styles
of uniforms worn by individual regiments on both sides. It was not that
rare (especially in the early days of the war) for some Northern units to
wear grey and Southern units to wear blue. (These units were often prime
candidates for friendly fire. ;-) ) Red and Green were also used in
uniforms on either side of the border. Also, depending on how long it had
been since a unit had been issued new uniforms, the colour of the cloth
might very well have changed from washing or exposure to the elements and
mud. It might also have been replaced by civilian clothes.
As far as styles go the major alternate uniform was the zouave style
derived from a uniform the the French dressed some their troops in. It
featured a short, tight fitting jacket over very baggy, high waisted pants.
In the Deadlands universe, I would suggest that due to the prolonged
length of the war, that uniforms would have become much more standardized
due to demands of running an army over the long haul. Simply put, the
logistics of supplying uniforms is much simplified (not mention much
cheaper) by having only a small number of uniform types. Say two, one for
officers and one for the enlisted men.
