 From my limited experience, the simple fact that it can be hard to get 
a strong presence from 'the other side' when they would have to travel 
pretty far distances to participate, so you probably have a lot of 
Southerners in the north and vice versa.

Of course I live in Maryland, so we get a lot of people who favor both 
sides, as I remember.
