[DL] Dice Rollin'
As I wrote earlier last week, I am new to this list (and to Deadlands), so I
don't know if this sort of thing has been posted before or not.
The Engineer (Mad Scientist) in me wanted to know about the percentages for
hitting different Target numbers with different dice roles. For example,
which has a better change of hitting a target number or 7, 3d4 or 1d8? I
had written a small utility to analyze Shadowrun dice rolls sometime back,
and quickly modified it to work with more that just d6 dice.
One of the interesting quirks in Deadlands is that hitting some Target
numbers is as easy as hitting the one below it. For example, if you use a
d6, a Target value of 7 is no different than a Target value of 6 (other than
Raises), simply because if you manage to roll a 6, you are guaranteed to
have at least a value of 7.
Anyway, below are the results of my utility. You will want to view it using
a fixed pitch font. Note that I also calculated the chance of Goin' Bust
... thought that is not taken into account for the percentage chance to hit
a specific Target Number (so the numbers are not exact). Give a little more
time, I can factor that in as well ... if people are interested in this sort
of Mad Science.
Oh, and which is better to make a Target roll of 7? Well that depends. 3d4
have a better shot than 1d8 of making that Target roll, but 1d8 has a better
chance of getting a Raise.
