Re: [DL] Civil War Question

John -- The Civil War mythology that you vaguely remember sounds like the
story of "Barbara Frietchie" as told in the narrative poem by John Greenleaf
Whittier (1807-1892).

Stonewall Jackson is impressed by the feistiness of this little old lady who
insists that she won't take down her Union flag. He decides to allow her to
keep it up:

"Who touches a hair of yon gray head
Dies like a dog! March on!" he said.

All day long through Frederick street
Sounded the tread of marching feet:

All day long that free flag tost
Over the heads of the rebel host.
