My local group has used the "body dice" for awhile
now in exactly this fashion. We deal with positive modifiers (like
raises) by rolling an extra body die per +1 on the modifier
chart (instead of modifying the roll on the hit location chart), and
choosing the result you want. However, we don't use the negative modifiers
for a height disadvantage (not sure how you'd handle this with the body
dice).
While the odds of getting specific locations are a
bit off from the regular rules, my players seem to enjoy this more than the
standard system (partly because most have never memorized the hit location
chart, and it feels better to immediately know where you have hit).
