OK, take this as an example:
Around the same time as Deadlands took place, in the real world, people were discovering bones of
giant reptiles the size of buildings.  Dinosaurs were eventually accepted into the realm of 'real
animals,' despite how monsterous they seemed.  Stories of them certainly generated fear, but so do
bears and wolves.  Just because something is scary doesn't mean it's going to be asssumed to be
supernatural.
