Re: [HoE] Wasted West Archetypes:The Kid.

The kid is a HUGE roleplaying thing. But even from the roleplaying
standpoint I have a couple of problems with the character:

A) What adult in their right mind is going to allow a child to adventure
with them when they are going to be encountering the horrors of the
Wasted West on a regular basis, even actively seeking them out if your
party includes a Storyteller, Templar, Old soldier, Robohunter, Law Dog,
Gunslinger, Postman, Ren BH, or Ren Doomsayer? Junkers, Librarians,
Scavengers and Ravenites will be constantly entering and searching the
big cities for high tech and they are the worst places in the known
world. A group of Savages MAY allow a child to adventure with them but I
would imagine that the child would have to demonstrate her usefulness or
toughness to the group, and that would more than likely involve some sort
of hunting or combat prowess (everybody pulls their weight in the tribe,
man).

If the child was lost, she may latch onto the group for an adventure or
two until they get to a town or such but then she will more than likely
be adopted by some concerned parent type (perhaps a couple that cannot
have children due to previous infection or radiation sickness). As a
parent of a 10 year old boy there is NO way that I would allow him to
accompany me into the wilds of HoE. And if I felt the compulsion to go
out and "do my part" for the world I would definitely deposit him with a
responsible adult while I was gone.

B) What adult in their right mind will allow some sick bastich to take a
child into the rad-wastes? The guy (or gal) must be either demented or a
pervert.

My original comment was that it seems that many of the contemporary games
out there these days seems compelled to include the child archetype (or
fuzzy bunny) as part of their game. I do not think that this is
appropriate in the vast majority of games (with Changeling being a
significant exception) and generally throw the archetype out on its ear.
As a parent I have a problem imagining my son out there combatting evil
(in its most corporeal sense) and so the archetype destroys more than
enhances any ROLE-PLAYING that I may be involved in. And that is just
MY personal opinion and I DO NOT feel that ANY of you should subscribe to
that opinion.

If the archetype adds to your enjoyment of the game, MORE POWER TO YA.

That is, after all, why we are in the hobby. Right?

PS I have discussed this topic with my gaming group and they ALL feel
the same as I do so please do not feel as though I am using my position
as Marshal to force my opinion even onto them.
