Actually the biggest opposition to Land Mines is the fact that after a
conflict is over they are left in place.  Later, civilians re-populate the
area and suffer the consequences of the mines.

The US Army has been developing the "Smart Mine Field" concept (which is
probably called enplacable munition or something because it is VERY un-PC to
call anything a mine these days)  which could be electronically disarmed.
