Been over these on the Deadlands listserv.  :-)

Official response - there isn't anything saying where Hickok was shot.  So,
in Deadlands, he definatly wasn't shot in the head.

This one there are records on.  He did live for awhile, and the doctor that
worked on him was feared to be a quack before he botched his healing roll
that fateful night.
