Is the player aware that he is causing a problem?
It seems to be a somewhat antiquated solution, but I find that speaking to
the player first often works best. That should be a sufficient wake-up
call. If the other players are equally bothered, have them weigh in as
well.
If that isn't a sufficient wake-up call, it's unlikely that anything you do
to his character is going to have much impact if you've already spelled it
out for the player himself.
By the same token, killing off his character if he deliberately ignores what
you said will probably result in his next character doing the same annoying
stuff.
