[HoE] time travel - spoiler?????

I'm soon going to send my HOE posse back in time to try and kill Stone, of
course there's a bit of a twist to it that I'll let you know later.

My question was: does time travel require a trip through the hunting grounds?
I remember something about Stone having to do this to return to the past, but
the third installment of the Devils Tower trillogy STILL isn't on sale here.

I'm planning to have the posse go back through a junkers portal, and (if any
survive) follow Stone back through his own gateway. (Don't worry, thay ain't
gonna kill 'im - just help him out a bit ;)  )

Would either of these methods require a trip through the hunting grounds, and if
so, would it be a nightmare like experience, or would they actually have to
travel and cover some ground?
