I always pictured it as a Revolver(A big ass Revolver).  It would be 
impractical but I thought it would be appropriate for the Southern Military. 
  Who cares if its practical.  Its big and its mean. Plus since when the 
Original book came out there were no revolvers in it(and my posse was big on 
fannin the hammer) we made it possible to convert the SA sidarm to be 
fannable.
