I must disagree with Mr Ranallo,
    To eliminate The Vatican you would have to bomb Rome, Jerusalem and Mecca 
(they have people in all those cities), which is not too hard, but you would 
also have to Bomb, every city large enough to have a Bishop, 

    You would have to Bomb every monastery.  Every Nunnery, 

    And most priests as priests would still be priests because they don't 
think they get their authority from the Vatican, they get it from God.  
    If ANYONE had a plan to suvive WWIII, The Vatican would have.  remember, 
they have been around at LEAST 1500 years, I doubt a little thing like a 
nuclear Holocaust would stop them.  There would be plans within plans. 
    I think the idea of Remnants of The Vatican after a post nuclear 
Holocaust would be a marveous idea for a book... oh... Wait... it WAS a 
marveous idea for a book, 'A Canticle for Liebowitz'.  A wonderfully deep 
book, 
    Now wouldn't it be fun to play with what The Vatican would become?  
Communication would be shut off, so I think maybe American clergy might make 
for a "Hometown Vatican" while they wait for word from Rome.  Priests, like 
all arcanes, would suffer increases to their powers (Due to closer proximity 
to the Hunting Grounds), Going around, ministering to those in the wastes who 
need it.  Or just staying in one place and slowly enriching it.  They have 
precident.  Was Ireland in St. Patrick's time any better developed and any 
less hostile than The Wastes of North America?  The only reason that I don't 
think The Librarians are that clever is that The Jesuits have been doing that 
for Centuries (Yes, complete with the subtle influencing of governments).  
    As un PC as it would be, I would say The Vatican would survive WWIII and 
that in any good Wasted West, there would be priests. Especially if 
communication would be cut off, I bet American priests would make due rather 
than dissolve thie order.  
    Anyways, who else but Americans could have 'Pope Josephine'?
