It didn't come up (nobody opted to play a Templar or Doomie), but it
wouldn't be all that hard to work out. The whole "My master was killed by
X, it's my job to avenge him/her and I'm gonna do it on my own" is the
first thing that springs to mind, but there are plenty of other
possibilities. You can make up all kinds of stuff.
Look at it from the Luke Skywalker side of things. Ben Kenobi finds him
and teaches him a bit, but ends up getting whacked. Luke figures some stuff
out on his own, then goes to find Yoda. He learns some from Yoda then runs
off on his own again, before coming back to Yoda for the final lessons. But
in the end, Luke is still learning what it is to be a Jedi Knight.
All you have to do is say the character has learned enough or is enough
of a natural at being a Doomsayer or Templar to pick up much of it on his
own, perhaps with a helping hand from the occasional NPC. Along the way,
you supply the appropriate obstacles to make the character a better Templar
or Doomsayer.
